Disability Insurance Benefits

Disability insurance benefits are one type of unemployment insurance available through the government. Disability unemployment insurance is designed specifically to assist those who cannot work due to physical reasons, which could literally be a physical disability or an illness. Disability insurance is meant to help those who cannot work for an extended period of time, whereas other types of unemployment insurance issued by the government are meant for people who are out of work for only a limited length of time. Usually to qualify for disability insurance benefits, you must be unable to work for at least twelve months. Some people receive disability benefits while they recover from an illness or injury, and others receive disability benefits for the majority of their lives.

Eligibility for disability insurance is based on several factors.

  • If a medical condition prevents you from continuing to work in your field and a different line of work is not appropriate, you may be eligible to receive benefits.
  • The federal government provides a list of medical conditions that are usually covered under disability. These include many conditions such as mental disabilities, sensory impairments, and disorders that affect any of the body’s many organ systems.
  • To apply for disability insurance, you need to provide medical proof of your condition. Your doctor and any health care facilities you have used need to supply records of your medical history, your diagnosis, and your doctor’s recommendations for treatment. Generally, the more information you submit, the more likely you are of being approved for disability insurance benefits quickly.

Other types of private insurance can replace part of your income if a medical condition leaves you out of work for less than one year. Many insurance companies offer short-term or long-term insurance plans for purchase. Some employers even provide these plans to their employees free of charge as part of their employee benefit package. Usually short or long-term disability plans replace a certain percentage of your income during the time you are unable to work. The amount of income replacement you receive will depend on the terms of your plan. For example, cases covered by a private disability insurance plan could be a broken leg or an illness that keeps you from performing your job duties and receiving wages for a few weeks or a few months.
